Jasmine Manzoor – May 12 controversy

with one comment

Animated discussion – why ANP is restarting old issues at this time of “war” in Swat (relates to ANP decision to start protest on May 12, 2007 events – in which deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was prevented from addressing the Karachi Bar Council).

MQM accusing ANP of being weak against terrorists but throwing weight around in Karachi to start problems again. Also point to discovery of suicide jacket material from ANP office when Rangers went after attackers from ANP area.

N.D. Khan (PPP) saying war is going on and should not start more problems and that media should calm down also – seems frustrated at ANP for bringing up issue. And that May 12 issue has been overtaken by the “success” of having Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry reinstated.

It is as if ANP is almost celebrating or using the Swat situation to start new issues in Karachi. Or perhaps it is an effort to REASSERT their role among Pashtun in Karachi following their humiliating crushing defeat in Swat at the hands of Tehreek-e-Taliban and Sufi Muhammed. It might be an effort for them to reassert their role as the leader of the Pashtun. In an indirect way it might be a positive effort in that if they DO NOT do it they may fear losing that demographic to more pro-Taliban elements (which would be worse in Karachi).

ANP saying they have to prosecute “what happened on May 12” (even though they did not do it last year). The question does arise why they suddenly are recalling it this year.

Jasmine introduces information from intelligence reports to challenge the participants.
