Lucman discusses role of media/behaviour with Imran Anwar (Pak-American journalist) – TV One – May 11, 2009

Or how Musharraf (the “aamir” and “worst dictator in world” if politicians are to be believed) created the “most free media in the world”.

An aside on the “lawyer’s movement”:

However Imran Anwar seems naive in his being inspired by the “lawyer’s movement” and elevation of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. Sitting in New York, he may not have known the political forces at work which ensured that “civil society” would get activated, and the PRIME mover behind the movement – the PPP. And how it was primarily used to pressurize for better terms during negotiations with Musharraf. The result of which was that Chaudhry Shujaat suggesting that her demand for NRO should be accepted but restriction on 3rd term should not be removed (source: Sheikh Rashid interview on TV). Once Benazir got her way, they dumped the movement.

Which was apparent in the inability of Aitzaz Ahsan to mobilize even one significant demonstration in Islamabad after that – he instead gave the excuse that the lawyers were demonstrating in their respective Bar Councils !

Then Nawaz Sharif saw reinstatement of Iftikhar Chaudhry as the perfect antidote to Musharraf being in power. Would give him a fellow aggrieved party in the Supreme Court. Plus he was hoping for favourable re-examination of cases against him (for which he already had a pardon from Musharraf under Saudi “deal”).

But Nawaz Sharif had little penetration in the lawyer’s community (which is overrepresented by former PPP “jiyalas” who went into legal profession after being PPP activists). As the legal profession was a relatively easy one to join for those with unconventional backgrounds or interrupted education (due to political activity).

So the “lawyer’s movement” did not start as easily as now there was no longer a PPP-lawyer segment (apart from Aitzaz Ahsan and a few prominent PPP lawyers). And the movement petered along on a small segment of lawyers. It was not under Nawaz Sharif added his (usually non-lawyer) manpower (as in the Long March from Lahore to Islamabad) that it acquired some scale.
