Kiss of Death (Snake) – Dr. Shaista – ARY Morning Show

with 3 comments

Waqar Zaka (host of “Living on the Edge” a “dare” TV show) with Dr. Shaista Wahidi (host of Morning Show on ARY TV) where they try to have her achieve a “Guinness World Record” for female host kissing a snake on the head (between head and eyes).

Interesting for the interaction between the two and the snake.

Other than that, don’t know what the relevance is for this – but evidently it is seen as evidence that women have guts as well (I guess they haven’t heard of childbirth).

Shehbaz Sharif extrajudicial killings (Update 1)

with one comment

A number of people are supporting Shehbaz Sharif actions in this case (if youtube comments are any indicator).

The gut feelings of those affected by crime ARE for immediate payback. After all they KNOW who the criminals are and are SURE.

However, as a state and as state machinery, there is a compulsion to have a “system” for doing things. If the court system is corrupt, then the compulsion should be to fix the court system first, rather than getting impatient and starting to “fix” it by having the police take over responsibilities of the courts. This is tantamount to weakening or removing the “need” for courts.

Here is a representative comment supporting the killing of criminals without judgement by qazi/judge:

This “kid” wasn’t brought into the house from anywhere. He was one of the three criminals who broke into this house previous night. He was also involved in killing the retired army officer inside. He was held by the security forces who took him inside and killed him as well. We all know these criminals use their resources if arrested. If Lucman has to show it on Tele,he should show the true picture, the whole story and not just the dark side of the picture to sell his channel.

Here I have tried to separate the emotion aspect (how aggrieved victim thinks) from the “management of government” issue:

Which judge ruled that the kid should be killed in this manner ?

Who decided he should be killed this way – Shehbaz Sharif ? Or the police ?

The police have no interest in violating the rules. Obviously someone high up is giving the order – what are the police asking in return for going outside the law ?

Is this type of “partnership in crime” creating a “relationship” between Shehbaz Sharif and those involved in such “operations” ? Will they do other assassinations for him ?

What prevents such policemen from doing the same thing in other cases (that the CM has not authorized) ?

Is restoration of judiciary only for “special cases” like Nawaz Sharif plane hijacking case ?

Do murderers get a hearing in court ? Or should murderers never wind up in court ?

The media has grown by 100 times – and it is no longer just monitored by literate people (as was the case with print media).

The Sharif brothers are playing a very dangerous game – both for themselves and because of the message this sends to people “violate the rule of law”.

It is no wonder that Shehbaz Sharif did not immediately criticize the extra-judicial killings in Swat or Sufi Mohammed. They are doing the SAME thing in Lahore (i.e. running their own court/execution system).

Sufi Mohammed is actually asking for much less. Nawaz Sharif wanted to become “Amir-ul-Momineen” (at the end of previous tenure).

Nazir Naji erupts in Lucman Show

leave a comment »

Nazir Naji (journalist) erupts in Lucman Show at the mismanagement in Pakistan.

How the politicians are not in control.

How little these people supported Musharraf when he needed them. Just because he talked gruff was not grounds to hate him. At least he talked as EQUAL to journalists.

As I said earlier, it was Musharraf who CREATED the media, fostered it and gave RESPECT to journalists by sitting with them as equals (and not as feudals/mazara).

Yet even THEN, Dr. Shahid Masood interviewed Benazir with gratefulness in his voice and bent in a posture of deep reverence, with his hands in his lap. NO MENTION of Surrey Palace. Yet these same people became “shayr” (tiger) when they interviewed Musharraf.

What was the reason ? Musharraf treated them like human beings.

Shehbaz Sharif extrajudicial killings

with one comment

Shehbaz Sharif extrajudicial killings – Lucman Show – NewsOne – Mar 9, 2009.

Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif use of “extrajudicial killings” (murder of alleged criminals by police on orders of Shehbaz Sharif) is well known from their earlier tenures.

It seems they had restarted this practice in their recent incarnation.

In this episode, Lucman presents a video recorded by a resident of the locality where the police staged an “encounter”. Supposedly holding some youngsters with blindfolds outside the house, taking them in, staging a raid, and then killing them in a hail of bullets. Lucman states he has video of the police press conference where the same youngsters were presented as the criminals who were raided.

Lucman presents the video evidence to a journalist for followup. Other guests are Humanyun Gohar (son of Altaf Gauhar – of dubious fame from Ayub Khan era).

The quality of guests is not the main issue – but the fact that evidence has been presented which could lead to the conviction of Shehbaz Sharif for ordering extrajudicial killings, and if some police officers turn state informer, it could lead to the inclusion of cases from their previous term.

While it is true that some of those killed may have been criminals, and the courts “let them go”, however the weakness in the court system should not be remedied by the actions of the police, since it tends to degenerate the situation further, and leads to public distrust of the police and the courts. The solution is not to give further powers to police to kill on sight, but to remedy the flaw at the court level.
